Little Leaders: Exceptional Men in Black History

Vashti Harrison

Film production company Oscar worked hard for success. He wrote newspaper articles and books, founded a publishing company, and his third book attracted the attention of black filmmakers, but Oscar wanted to become a film director himself and was rejected. Thus, he made his own publishing company and made the first full-length film made by a man. At that time, black people were always faced with the limitations of being cast in roles such as servants and dancers in Hollywood movies. So Oscar challenged the prevailing prejudice, describing black people as complex human beings. Oscar never stopped working to achieve his goal. I have come to realize that even non-mainstream people can change their lives. In a black life full of discrimination and prejudice, Oscar fought back and went out into the world against the absurdity he received. Oscar's behavior made us think a lot, so I thought maybe I was just focusing on what I didn't have and feeling frustrated. Oscar's imposing and challenging attitude also gave me a lot of thought in the reality of self-rationalization. It must be a better time to live now than Oscar did. Like Oscar, I need to think of a way to be a better me.

Question

1. Why did the film company want to make Oscar’s third book into a movie?

2. How did Oscar describe black people as complicated people, in contrast to what Hollywood movies did at the time?

3. Why did Oscar what to direct the film himself?
