The House On Mango Street

Selection motivation: Recently, I have become interested in issues on various human rights abuses, gender discrimination, and discrimination of refugees and immigrants that have shocked many people internationally. Therefore, I looked up articles and columns about those issues and studied them. In the meantime, I came to know that this book deals with various events to think about the issues, so I thought it would be beneficial to select and explore it.

Story: The book depicts various aspects of poor lives on Mango Street, where Mexicans who have immigrated to the United States live together.

What I felt after reading a book: The book features a variety of socially disadvantaged women, including women who cannot leave the house due to their patriarchal fathers, girls who have been sexually assaulted, and women who suffer from domestic violence. I felt again that there is a shadow that blocks injustice from the attention of the public in any society, and that there are so many people who are treated unfairly and live without even basic human rights. I naturally started to think about what we can do to help guarantee their human rights more substantially. The first thing is to be aware that their human rights are being trampled on. We are living in a global village in which all the people on it are connected to each other. It's time to abandon the thought that their pain is not related to us and to convert our interest into action. Since I read the book, I have become more sure that we must internalize this attitude.
